Job Description:
Springfield Technical Community College seeks applicants for the full time position of Instructor/Assistant professor to the Medical Assisting Program. This Instructor/Assistant Professor will report to the Department Chair of the Medical Assisting program and the Dean of the School of Health and Patient Simulation (SHPS). The Instructor/Assistant Professor will implement management practices and processes that maximize personnel and supportive resources in the achievement of School of Health and Patients Simulation goals, which align with the College's goals outlined in the Student Success plan. With the diverse population of the Greater Springfield region, the Instructor/Assistant Professor will demonstrate a strong commitment to the value of working with students, faculty and staff that reflect the community The Instructor/Assistant Professor will work together with faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in which all can succeed. Aligning the principles of teaching held by the Medical Assisting faculty, the person filling this position believes that student learning and engagement is at the heart of student success, and that developing the craft of teaching advising, support and engagement requires opportunities for learning, reflection and practice. The Instructor/Assistant Professor will provide guidance and nurture student learning. An Instructor/Assistant Professor in the Medical Assisting program is directly responsible and accountable for ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals and objectives of the Medical Assisting program, and ensuring program compliance with regulatory bodies. They must direct student learning and assess student progress in achieving the requirement of the appropriate learning domains: cognitive, psychomotor and affective. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student retention goals; participation in educational planning; evaluation student of performance; motivation and advising students; and generation program reports as needed in accordance with the mission, core values and purposes of the Medical Assisting program, School of Health and Patient Simulation and the college. Faculty will be required to participate in the coordination of aspects of the Medical Assistant program including classroom lecture, on-campus clinical laboratories and development of curriculum. The instructor/Assistant Professor will be working with students of other allied health disciplines, specifically respiratory therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, radiography and sonography. Knowledge of the roles of members of the health care team and duties in ambulatory and in-patient setting is needed. Faculty will be responsible for enhancing student learning through the use "patient simulations". CORI/SORI and other "clearances" as allowed by law are an initial and continued requirement for employment The ideal candidate works together with all faculty and staff to create an atmosphere of trust and respect in which all can succeed. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with all department members and use creativity in developing and implementing teaching and learning activities. They may work beyond the confines of the Medical Assisting department to collaborate with colleagues in other disciplines and departments. Courses will be taught to other departments. The Instructor/Assistant Professor must be a team player that fosters good communication and cohesiveness with students, fellow faculty and colleagues from all parts of the college. SAMPLE OF DUTIES: Under the supervision of the Department Chair of Medical Assisting and the Dean of School of Health and Patient Simulation, the Instructor/Assistant Professor will demonstrate excellence in the following areas: Leadership and Management:

  • Understand and supports the College's mission and supports the educational and informational needs of the SHPS students.
  • Interact professionally with students
  • Understands, values and acts according to the wide-range of needs are found in a diverse student population appreciating the expectations of Medical Assisting and Allied Health students.
  • Uphold the policies and regulations of the School of Health and patient Simulation.
  • Collaborates with departmental faculty and other department SHPS faculty in initiatives to increase support for students.
  • Actively participates in updating program goals, and works collaboratively with department faculty in achieving departmental goals.
  • Submit promptly and in proper form reports and requests of the Department Chair and the Dean of the School of Health and Patient Simulation.
  • Attend all departmental, school and college meetings as required.
  • Serve on college committees as required. Teaching & Assessment:
    • Teaching Medical Assisting courses and other departmental courses to students from a diverse cultural and educational background. The person filling this position believes that all students can learn, and that student engagement in the classroom enhances knowledge of academic content and leads to higher student success.
    • Ensures that student learning outcomes for courses are current with programmatic accreditation, assessed regularly, and are documented appropriately for the programmatic accreditation.
    • Provides guidance to students in their learning and educational planning.
    • Advise and register students for upcoming semesters.
    • Use content outlines to direct learning
    • Evaluate and record all student progress Personnel:
      • Abide by the regulations set out in the Massachusetts Community College Council collective bargaining agreement. Facilities:
        • Ensures utilization and proper use of learning equipment and materials. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
          • Actively participate in faculty organizations/initiatives of the School of Health and Patient simulation
          • Maintain and update professional and clinical competencies and certifications
            Requirements:
            • Bachelor's Degree required.
            • Certification in American Heart Association BLS CPR required
            • CMA (AAMA) , or RMA (AMT) or RN
            • Springfield Technical Community College's Medical Assistant Certificate program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon recommendation of the Medical Assisting Educational Review board (MAERB).
            • Medical Assisting faculty must be current and competent in the MAERB Core Curriculum objectives included in their assigned teaching as evidenced by education and/or experience, and have instruction in educational theory and techniques.
            • Experience working with allied professions in a hospital setting or ambulatory care setting.
            • Preference given to applicants with prior teaching experience at a community college or CAAHEP accredited Medical Assisting program.
            • Desire and ability to work with a diverse student body in a cooperative environment.
            • Experience creating and implementing student learning outcomes, evaluating student performance and progress through a variety of assessment approaches; the use of classroom technology, online learning, and student-centered learning techniques are expected skills.
            • Commitment to college service activities is required.
              Additional Information:
              SALARY: $47,000 - $58,000/Academic Year. To be determined based on experience; fringe benefits included.
