Job Description:

Eight (8) to Twelve (12) hour responsibility and accountability for providing direction and leadership to staff ensuring development and appreciation of nursing standards to enhance the quality of care to patients within stated assigned areas. Continually aware of patient census and facilitates admissions, discharges and transfers between units in a timely manner. Collaborates with Director / Nurse Manager in developing goals, evaluating staff, and maintaining regulatory compliance. Serves as a role model as well as a resource to staff, patients, and families and the interdisciplinary team. Coordinates unit specific quality /process improvement initiatives. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: * Ensures the delivery of quality patient care within nursing unit(s). Conducts administrative and clinical support functions in a manner that facilitates effective measures of operation of the hospital during assigned hours. * Demonstrates leadership abilities and assumes a supervisory role. * Assesses the learning needs of staff and assumes responsibility for ensuring continued professional growth and development by promoting an environment conducive to learning. * Acts as a clinical role model to the nursing staff. * Collaborates with the Director / Nurse Manager on the hiring, disciplinary and evaluation processes for staff as well as labor relations issues /concerns. * Effectively markets the Hospital and departmental services. Develops and maintains cordial relationships with other department supervisors in order to facilitate quality patient care. * Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients serviced in assigned unit(s). * May serve in capacity of Administrative Supervisor, House. * Assesses the impact of, and plans strategies to address such issues as: * Ethnic, cultural and diversity changes in the population * Political and social influences * Financial and economic issues * The aging of society and demographic trends * Ethical issues related to health care * Ensures evidence-based practice by participating in and involving the nursing staff in evaluative research activities. Provides or facilitates educational experiences for nursing and other students. Ensures shared accountability for professional practice. * Advocates for a work environment that minimizes work-related illness and injury. Ensures compliance with any applicable regulatory agencies. * Works with the Nurse Manager, Director, Bed coordinator, and House supervisors, in ensuring patient flow in order to facilitate patient throughput through the hospital in a timely way. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Currently registered in Commonwealth of Massachusetts. * BSN or actively working toward the same. * Two to four (2-4) years demonstrated clinical experience in an acute care setting / Behavioral Health Setting (may vary by specialty). * Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills. * CPR certification. ACLS preferred (house, ER, IMC, ICU), neonatal CPR (Family Life Center), Specialty Certification (unit based). BLS and CPI required in Behavioral Health. * Demonstrates critical thinking skills in difficult clinical and administrative situations. WORKING CONDITIONS: * Regular and routine exposure to a variety of unpleasant physical working conditions, and frequent exposure to injury or occupational or contagious disease hazards which require routine precautions. Jobs at this level spend the majority of time in the environment. * Constant work demands and irregularity of hours create considerable inconvenience for home and social life planning, such as frequent availability, or, constant shift rotation, or location imposes frequent interruptions, and distractions that are both bothersome and not inherent in the work. The work requires frequent substantive involvement in stressful situations causing considerable strain routinely. * Requires considerable physical effort on a consistent basis as in lifting, pulling, or pushing unyielding loads (heavy, bulky, awkward, more than 40 pounds). REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: * Reports to the Nurse Manager and to the Director. * Responsible for supervising the work of 5 to 100+ employees depending on area. Apply
