Peer/Family Specialist199-379 Peer/Family Specialist We're looking to bring on board the Peer/Family Family who will support people in need psychiatric services to live independently in the community. S/he works within the Agency's team model, establishing open communication, support, and accountability among co-workers. The Peer/Family Specialist provides a unique perspective and related skills to the integrated treatment team, including confidence and experience in the recovery process. S/he will communicate this perspective to Persons to better advocate for them in the formulation of IAPs and the development of programs and services. Job functions

  • AGENCY SERVICES-necessary to meet overall agency goals and provide support to management and program staff. 75-90%
  • Helps develop Person's confidence in order to articulate their goals for recovery
  • Interacts with Persons in order to assess needs, provide information, discuss problems, identify patterns and stressors, and encourage growth and development
  • Works with and supports individuals to prepare for a variety of formal and informal meetings including treatment planning, employment services and social engagements.
  • Assists Persons with activities of daily living, e.g. food shopping and preparation, housekeeping, laundry, budget/banking
  • At the request of the Person may transport Person in matters related to service delivery, e.g. medical appointments, shopping, job interviews, vocational programs, banking, etc.
  • Provides for and participates in Person's recreational activities e.g. dining out, spectator sports, movies, shopping
  • Supports and advocates for Persons during admission and termination from program.
  • Notifies supervisory staff immediately in the event of a Person's crisis, suspected illegal activity, or any behavior constituting an incident in the program
  • Visits Persons; attends hospital group therapy meetings with Persons when appropriate
  • Informs, trains, supports and empowers individuals using mental health services.
  • Communicates, represents and promotes the perspective of the person receiving services, serving as an advocate in collaboration with the person.
  • Facilitates mutual support and self-help groups and/or guides participants in the development of their own leadership and facilitation skills.
  • Promotes understanding of each person's cultural identity to be able to enhance support and respect of the person's choices.
  • Adheres to program policies and procedures manual
  • Participates in team approach, sharing responsibility for Person services
  • Develops activities, programs and resources that support people in recovery to achieve their self-identified goals.
  • Works with individuals to develop or strengthen natural supports outside of the human service or mental health systems. II. ADMINISTRATIVE/RECORD KEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES - necessary for maximizing department efficiency. 5-10%
    • Attends bi-weekly supervisory meeting with Director of Recovery Support
    • Maintains any documentation within the parameters of the Peer Code of Ethics III. COLLATERAL/ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES - necessary to respond to external environment which influences the department. 5-10%
      • Works within processes and procedures of referral source
      • Liaisons with other service-providing agencies
      • Strengthens working relationships with significant resources in Person's network as in support of individuals' recovery goals.
      • Expands knowledge of service options and program environments that are conducive to the recovery process.
      • Able to react to change productively and to handle other tasks assigned due to changing environments. IV. PROFESSIONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT - necessary to develop to full potential professionally. 2-5%
        • Participates in special events, conferences, workshops and trainings with the mental health system and in the community to keep current with emerging evidence and knowledge relevant to the recovery process.
        • Attends Agency-required trainings
        • Participates in relevant Agency and/or community task forces
        • Engages in self-evaluation to develop professional goals Knowledge & Skills Required
          • Knowledge of Persons' behavioral dynamics
          • Understands the relationship between personal empowerment and recovery.
          • Good oral and written communication skills
          • Ability to provide goal-oriented services
          • Ability to respond effectively to crisis
          • Ability to counsel
          • Ability to structure and organize job responsibilities with minimal supervision
          • Ability to safely transport Persons
          • Red Cross CPR and First Aid
          • Ability and willingness to obtain MAP certification
          • Valid driver's license; reliable transportation
          • Ability to work effectively within the mental health system
          • Physical and mental demands of the job located at the end of job description Qualifications
            • Current or previous experience as someone who has experienced a life altering trauma and has recovered. A willingness to convey this experience as relevant.
            • High school diploma required
            • Bachelor's Degree preferred
            • Certified Peer Specialist
            • Certified Family Specialist preferred
            • Certified Recovery Coach preferred Benefits
