The Department of Youth Services (DYS) is seeking a dynamic individual for the role of Institution Security Officer II - located at 51 East Mountain Rd, Westfield MA. In this role the selected candidate will be a key member of the residential team, direct-care staff monitor, and provide on-site and immediate intervention of DYS youth in our residential facilities. DYS employs staff in various professions and backgrounds in order to engage young people in strategies that support positive youth development. For additional information about the Department of Youth Services and its programs please watch: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gyP0kCJ181nBakh9Cc0pNNEyPw7kAoI6/view Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive): Maintain safety and security of building and property to ensure that Department property is free from theft, damage, or persons from hazards or interference, as well as conduct security checks of youth, buildings, and grounds. Conduct periodic tours to check for irregularities and to inspect protection devices and fire control equipment. Preserve order and may enforce regulations pertaining to personnel, visitors, and premises, monitor entrances and exits to prevent unapproved or unlawful entry, control entrances, the movement of people and vehicles, and parking, operate doors and gates, and examine vehicle contents, monitor remote entrances using closed circuit television, operate electronic surveillance, communication, and security equipment. In a calm manner, direct persons who cause disturbances to leave the property. Issue employee and visitor badges, screen employees and visitors in an efficient manner in order to expedite their admittance to the facility, perform searches using metal detectors on visitors entering the facility, including family members of clients and professional/legal visitors. Patrol assigned site on foot or in vehicle, check for unsafe conditions, hazards, unlocked doors, security violations, blocked ingress and egress, mechanical problems, and unauthorized persons, inspect buildings and grounds using appropriate equipment and protective gear. Prepare logs or reports as required for post, enter report information in a computer using standard grammar, inspect security control logs and respond appropriately as required. Observe and report incidents or suspicious activity to client representatives, management, life/safety personnel or public safety authorities as appropriate for the circumstances and/or as required by the post, communicate internally with staff as well as with outside agencies, Communication Information Center (CIC), Notification Systems, and the general-public, and relay pertinent information to administration as needed. Respond to emergencies in an orderly manner utilizing proper training and following all SOPs (Standard Operating Procedure, remain calm and alert during emergency situations and communicate information to appropriate personnel as needed, assists direct-care staff with searches and restraints in accordance with Departmental policy. Carry out specific tasks and duties of a similar nature and scope as required for the assigned post. Assist in providing training to other control staff. Preferred Qualifications: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to report emergencies to 911 and designated emergency responders, ability to write clearly and produce legible Incident Reports, ability to read and understand all posted warning and danger signs of potential hazards, safety instructions and Owner Policies. Proficiency with access control, video management and communication system platforms, experience with Genetec Security Center preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to remain calm in emergency situations, excellent judgement and the ability to evaluate situations, identify critical issues quickly and accurately and respond appropriately in accordance with departmental policy and procedures. Ability to research, investigate, and compile information, document and relate information, ability to document and relay information clearly and accurately. Ability to mediate conflict with tact, diplomacy, and professionalism, ability to maintain professional composure, and adapt to changes in the external environment and organization. Ability to produce written routine correspondence, including logs and reports. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively at various social levels and across diverse cultures. Ability to maintain composure when dealing with authorities, executives, clients, staff, and the public, occasionally under conditions of urgency and in pressure situations. Ability to deal with stressful situations, such as challenging individuals who are in or approaching an unauthorized area. Ability to deal with multiple tasks concurrently. Ability to use discretion when handling sensitive and confidential information. Prior experience in similar security work, a person of mature judgment and ability to think and act quickly in an emergency. The ideal candidate should be flexible and adaptable and have the ability to work as part of a team. Additional Information: Must have reliable transportation. Minimum Age Requirement: 21 years The ideal candidate is flexible and responsive to change. Employees in this position may be required to work extended hours, nights, holidays and/or weekends. Our residential facilities require 24/7 monitoring; assigned shifts include day, evening, and night. Shift and Days Off: 2 nd Shift (4:00pm - 12:00am), Sunday and Monday off Please note: Incumbents in this position are designated emergency personnel.
