Job Description:
The Peer Support Specialist uses their own unique lived
experience in order to support and advocate for those who have had
similar life-disrupting challenges, such as psychiatric diagnoses,
trauma histories, homelessness, or problems with substance use.
RESPONSIBILITIESUtilizes their own lived experience and recovery
story in order to inspire hope and advocate for change.Provides
emotional support and self-advocacy, utilizing the principles
outlined by the Peer Code of Ethics and Intentional Peer Support
core competencies.Shares information about community resources,
including other peer-run groups, housing and benefit resources, and
community eventsAccompanies and facilitates people's engagement in
community activities and resources of their choice, including but
not limited to connections with the Recovery Learning CommunityUpon
the request of the individual supported, the Peer Specialist offers
support and advocacy in treatment settings such as at Community
Service Plan meetings or other appointmentsMaintains confidential
information within the teamResponds to requests for information and
phone calls in a timely fashion within hours providedNotifies
supervisory staff immediately in the event of a crisis or incident
in the program or with participantsREQUIREMENTSMust have direct
lived experience with psychiatric diagnoses, trauma histories,
homelessness, problems with substance and/or other life-disrupting
events. The ideal Peer Support Specialist will have strong
interpersonal skills, empathy for others, demonstrated commitment
to supporting those with significant needs, flexibility and a sense
of humor. They must also be able to work well within both a team
model and independently. They must also possess reliability and the
ability to learn about and observe rules of confidentiality and
ethics. Completion of the Certified Peer Specialist training and
computer skills strongly preferred but not mandatory. Other
peer-based training such as Intentional Peer Support, Alternatives
To Suicide, and Hearing Voices Network Facilitator training a plus.
We offer supervisory support, regular team gatherings, and ongoing
