*Qualifications: *

1. Has a high school diploma or equivalent;
2. Has valid Massachusetts driver's license;
3. Has experience in custodial work preferred, but not required;
4. Has knowledge of and experience using custodial cleaning supplies and equipment preferred, but not required;
5. Has basic knowledge and experience regarding the repair of custodial cleaning equipment preferred, but not required;
6. Has knowledge related to electrical, plumbing, heating/HVAC, mechanical, and fire alarm systems preferred, but not required;
7. Has ability to work both indoors and outdoors, in various weather conditions and climates, to perform custodial duties and responsibilities such as several hours per day standing, walking, sitting, lifting (i.e., frequently up to 50 lbs. and occasionally over 50 lbs.), bending, reaching, and twisting;

8. Has ability to work well with others to perform custodial duties and responsibilities;
9. Has ability to comprehend and follow both verbal and written directions related to custodial assignments and duties; and
10. Other qualifications as deemed to be required by the school district

*Reports To: *Director of Buildings & Grounds, Principal, and Custodial Supervisor

*Assigned To/Evaluated By: *Director of Buildings & Grounds with input from Principals and Custodial
Supervisors

*Job Goal: *To provide students, school district employees and visitors with safe, clean, healthy, comfortable, attractive, and efficient indoor and outdoor facilities on a daily basis.

*Performance Responsibilities*:

1. Assists with the opening and closing of the facilities as required;
2. Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are either open or locked according to the

Principal's facility security plan and that all panic door hardware are working properly during the hours of building occupancy;

3. Checks environmental conditions (e.g., heat, ventilation, air conditioning systems) as required to ensure comfortable building environment and appropriately reports problems if a remedy cannot be corrected;

4. Raises and lowers the U.S flag, and State Flag if available, as required on a daily basis;
5. Makes minor repairs as appropriate and remedies unsafe or unhealthy conditions if possible, but reports the need for major repairs and or very unsafe and unhealthy conditions to the custodial supervisor or principal as needed;

6. Performs janitorial work in assigned areas, or throughout both the indoor and outdoor facilities, such as, but not limited to (i.e., some items daily, some items one or more times

per week, some items bi-weekly, and some items monthly as assigned): a. Picking up rubbish and debris b. Emptying and cleaning of all rubbish and recycling containers and disposing of trash or relocating of recycled materials as required c. Sweeping and washing hallways, classroom floors, etc. d. Dusting, cleaning and polishing furniture and shades e. Vacuuming carpets f. Cleaning chalk boards as needed or required g. Striping wax and re-waxing floors h. Mopping (dry and wet), scrubbing, washing and disinfecting floors, sinks, drinking fountains, toilets, etc. (including bathrooms, locker rooms, kitchens, cafeterias) i. Washing walls, windows and mirrors j. Dusting and cleaning light fixtures, including replacing light bulbs as needed k. Checking for quantity of disposable supplies (e.g., tissue, paper towels, hand soap, etc.) and replenishing such supplies as needed (i.e., to not run out);
7. Moves furniture, equipment, etc., as needed, not only on a daily basis to perform cleaning duties and to assist with the daily operation of the schools, but to set up for special events and activities;

8. Keeps cleaning equipment and custodial facilities clean, neat and in good repair and order and performs minor maintenance and repairs on equipment and to facilities;

9. Performs yard keeping and minor landscaping chores as to maintain the school grounds in a safe, healthy and attractive condition;

10. Shovels, snow blows, and sands walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as needed and required;

11. Assists in emergency situations as would be considered appropriate for a custodian;
12. Works in cooperation with fellow custodians and with other school district employees, under the immediate direction of the Custodial Supervisor and the building Principal, to complete his/her job goal and daily responsibilities;

13. Is friendly and helpful to all visitors on daily basis;
14. As needed, will report to work, if available, in emergency and unusual circumstances;
15. On an equitable basis, will volunteer for building coverage related to special events outside of the normal working day, shift, etc.; and
16. Perform other duties as required.
